FLYING WITHIN TABLE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

Table Mountain (TM) is not only a National Park but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site with unbelievable floristic diversity. As such, flying in the park is subject to more rules and scrutiny than most other sites in South Africa and is thus considered to be the most sensitive paragliding site in South Africa. Please do not trample on or destroy plants or do anything which will threaten all the hard negotiations that took place to get and keep these sites flyable.

Everyone MUST have a VALID TMNP MY ACTIVITY CARD (Level 2), a VALID PILOTS LICENSE rated for the launch site and a site briefing. Some sites require “Sign Offs” and others are strictly advanced sites. Launch ONLY at the designated site. The best rule is to contact the Glen Paragliding Club and get a briefing from a competent local pilot. You must also consult the Paragliding Flying Sites guide on the Glen Paragliding Club website to familiarize yourself with each site rules.

The weather systems around the entire park are complex and some areas have little to no landing areas within easy reach. Venturis and lenticular situations are frequent and pre-frontal weather is generally to be avoided. Local pilots are always willing to help with info. The Table Mountain chain starts in the extreme north of the Peninsula and runs roughly north-south till it reaches Scarborough on the Atlantic Ocean some 30km away in a straight line. Its width rarely exceeds 10km. The launches range from 1000m ASL on TM itself to 140m ASL at Kommetjie. The flying is spectacular and a challenging mix of dynamic and thermic lift.

The Glen Paragliding Club has a formal working relationship with SANParks to monitor site usage, ecological deterioration, safety and compliance. Any pilot concerns should be directed to the Site Liaison Officer or the Chairman of the Glen Paragliding Club.

The Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for Paragliding / Hang gliding is the governing document under which we fly within Table Mountain National Park. Please make yourself familiar with it and its accompanying appendix.
