Lion’s Head Top Take-Off

After careful consideration, the Glen Safety Committee has decided to temporarily classify the Top Take-Off at Lion’s Head as a Sport License site. This follows a series of recent incidents and safety concerns.

Reasons for This Decision

  • A rise in incidents at the site.
  • Technically challenging take-off with tight cycles and a cliff launch.
  • Increasing number of Basic License pilots flying in unsuitable conditions.
  • The site is only safe to fly in a generally West wind direction.
  • The site is not suitable to flying in wind shadow conditions.

This site grading is effective immediately.

This is a temporary measure until a formal decision is finalised with SAHPA and other stakeholders.

Lion’s Head Flying
All pilots (tandem and solo) must announce Lion’s Head flights on the Glen Club - Lions Head Flying and Sign Off WhatsApp group.

Reasons for This Decision

  • Lion’s Head is a sensitive site as it is part of the Table Mountain National Park, a World Heritage Site.
  • There is an increasing number of pilots that fly the site without the appropriate permit or license.
  • There is an increasing number of first-time pilots that fly the site without appropriate briefing and supervision.
  • A notice on the WhatsApp group will ensure that appropriate information is shared about flying conditions and that first-time pilots receive the required briefing and supervision.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in keeping the site safe for all.
